From the S39 season onwards, goaltending is going to work a little differently in SHL Fantasy. This change will happen in two parts.

Firstly, instead of picking individual goaltenders, we will be picking the goaltending efforts of entire teams. There's several reasons behind this,

- To end instances of people having their seasons fucked over because they accidentally picked the backup goaltender (or the inevitable league upending disaster in the future when a team trades away their well regarded starter);
- To make it so that teams with multiple good goaltenders (such as when Minnesota had both Wahlgren and Anderssen recently) become great selections instead of risky ones;
- To ensure that every goaltender selection is going to play the same number of games (50) instead of what we would hope is 44 games (but often isn't quite);
- To buff the scores of goaltenders a little in general (backups tend to accrue anywhere from 20 to 50 points depending on how well they play).

Secondly, goaltenders will be scored differently;

Games won will now be worth 5 points instead of 3 points;
Saves will now be worth 0.1 points instead of 0.15 points;
Shutouts will remain unchanged from 10 points.

This will level out where goaltenders actually get their score from; instead of having 150-200 points from saves alone and as little as 60-70 from games won, games won and saves will both come out to be worth about 100-150 for the average goaltender. This should also firmly push the balance towards looking for goaltenders on good teams instead of looking for goaltenders on bad teams.

These changes should provide a noticeable buff to the participating efforts of goaltenders in the future; by the measures I'm using to balance fantasy in the future, goaltenders will be the strongest position on average that you can pick (by about 10-20 points above average). I'm intentionally allowing this to be a little higher because we're really, really bad at picking goaltenders. Hopefully, these changes will also improve that too by adding some clarity on what to try and target when filling your goaltending slot.

~~~
I do intend to change the numbers for skaters in the future as well, but I'm not happy with any numbers I have yet, so I wouldn't expect to see changes for that for another season or three.
What I will be bringing up instead soon, however, are official keeper leagues. I'll be keeping them simple (and thus accessible)- more details in a week or so.
And for reference on just how fucking bad we are at picking goaltenders, there are 14 starting goaltenders each year and 8 of them would be worthy of a spot on a fantasy team at the end of the year (i.e. there's 8 fantasy teams in each group). Assuming a blind guess, that's a 57% chance of getting one who deserved their spot. You don't want to know how good the entire SHL fantasy league is compared to that blind guess.
So, from now on, just pick a good team, regardless of the quality of the goalie.
